Everything You Need to Know About Electric Vehicles (EVs)

Everything You Need to Know About Electric Vehicles (EVs)

One of the biggest ways we are going to see a change in the automotive industry is with the rise of electric vehicles. These cars are a lot less expensive to run and maintain as well as being a lot better for the environment. But when it comes to choosing an electric vehicle, there are so many options to choose from.

History of electric Vehicle

electric vehicles history

Electric vehicles have been around for a long time, but they are still a relatively new concept. The most famous of all of the electric vehicles is the Tesla Model S which has become the poster vehicle for electric vehicles. The history of electric vehicles goes back over a century, but the first electric vehicles were little more than clever ideas that could never really take off. In the 21st century, electric vehicles are slowly starting to take off, but they still have a way to go if they are going to compete with the standard combustion-engine vehicle.

What are electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles, or EVs, are vehicles that run on electricity from a rechargeable battery. These vehicles are similar in performance to a gas-powered vehicle and are available for purchase today.  EVs are becoming more popular for a couple of reasons. First, EVs are generally cleaner and less expensive to operate than gasoline vehicles. They also require less maintenance and are much quieter.  Some people choose to purchase an EV as a way to reduce their carbon footprint, while others want to conserve natural resources such as fossil fuels.

Where did the idea of electric vehicle come from?

The idea of an electric vehicle came from Nicola Tesla, who invented a motor that ran on electricity. In 1899 he showed his motor to Thomas Alva Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. Edison was not excited about it and told Tesla that people would never pay $10 per gallon for electricity to power a vehicle. Tesla and Edison argued about this for years, and Edison even offered him $50,000 if he could invent a mechanism to automatically record votes counted by a machine. Tesla is said to have replied, “Yes, I could do it easily. I could do it so easily that I could connect it up to this machine and make it go.” Tesla demonstrated how easy it would be to record votes by using a mechanical vote counter that Edison had produced. Edison turned away and told him to do his best. Tesla took the mechanism and wrapped it around a pencil. He then stuck the pencil into the counter and it began recording votes.

First electric vehicle company

In 1884, the first electric vehicle company was founded by William Morrison of Des Moines, Iowa. Shortly after starting the company, the business fell on hard times and Morrison sold his company to a group of investors who wanted to produce an electric car for commercial use. During the first few years of its existence, the company did not sell very many vehicles and Morrison was forced to sell the company again in 1889. However, in 1890, the company was purchased for the third time and that same year, the company released its first electric car for commercial use. The car became very popular and was sold to many different countries. This ultimately saved the company from going bankrupt because by the year 1901, the company was able to produce its first bus.

Types of electric vehicles

There are three types of electric vehicles. They are:

1.  All-Electric Vehicle (EV) – These vehicles are powered by electric motors and they do not have traditional internal combustion engines.

 2.  Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) – These vehicles combine the electric motor with a traditional internal combustion engine.

3.  Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – These vehicles are similar to HEVs in that they also have an internal combustion engine.  They can also be plugged in to charge their batteries.

Advantages of electric vehicles

electric vehicles benefit

1-Easily the biggest advantage of having an electric vehicle is the vast range of models to choose from. As well as zero emissions, they also tend to be smooth and comfortable to drive. That’s a big change from the early days of electric cars, when most of the models that were available were small, impractical and had limited ranges. Today, you can buy zero-emission SUVs, big comfy family cars and easy to drive hatchbacks. You’ll also find that running costs are low as you don’t have to spend much on fuel. It’s also a good idea to vote with your dollars and buy an electric car, to encourage more manufacturers to build more models in the future. That way, the whole car market will become greener and the environment will be safer.

2-In this day and age when petrol prices are skyrocketing, the advantages of an electric vehicle are too many to ignore. There’s no need to worry about sudden spikes in prices or ever running out of fuel. Additionally, electric vehicles are quiet, easy to drive and have a very good range.  An electric vehicle is not only great for the environment, but it is also a practical option for people living in the city. With no noise and no emission, the electric car is a boon to the community and helps people live in harmony.

3-Electric vehicles, such as the ones you see in the streets, require no gas.  Gas is not only expensive, but it is also bad stuff for the environment.  Electric vehicles are therefore the logical alternative.  Not only they help to preserve the environment, but they also save the cost of getting gas at the pump.  In addition, a large number of companies lease electric vehicles, which helps save even further on gas. Electric vehicles are created to save money and preserve the environment.

Disadvantages of electric vehicles

In spite of is advantages over conventional fuel, electric cars do have few disadvantages. The average capacity of electric batteries is less than that of gasoline. In addition, the capacity degrades with time. So battery needs to be recharged daily. On the flip side, battery replacement technology has advanced enough to make replacement easier. Another disadvantage is the cost of electric vehicles, which are more expensive than conventional ones. Electric vehicles are also less developed than conventional ones. So it is difficult to determine the efficiency of these vehicles without further research. And electric vehicles face yet another issue, which is the lack of charging infrastructure. If electric vehicles are to replace conventional vehicles, the need for infrastructure is paramount. But building such infrastructure is capital-intensive.

The future of electric vehicles

electric vehicles Future

The future of EVs is bright as compared to traditional vehicles whose fuel economy is decreasing on an annual basis.  Conventional automobiles are powered by oil and gas, which is a non-renewable resource.  In the U.S., more than 60% of transportation energy consumption is attributed to passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs.  Fuel consumption of these vehicles is increasing every year.  At present, the oil and fuel consumption of automobiles is 45% of the annual oil consumption in the United States.  There is a growing concern globally as the price of oil is on the rise.  Under these circumstances government and private agencies are working hard to reduce fuel consumption.

The top 10 reasons to own an electric vehicles

  • EV’s are not just for the environment. There are many other benefits which make owning an EV a smart choice.
  • EVs emit no CO2, which is the leading factor associated with global warming.
  • Using electricity as fuel is significantly cheaper than using gasoline.
  • EVs are quick and responsive, as they do not have any transmission.
  • EVs do not require routine maintenance like traditional vehicles, since there are no internal combustion engines or transmissions in them.
  • EVs are more energy efficient that internal combustion vehicles.
  • EVs are made of lighter materials, which makes them easier to handle.
  • EVs take less time to recharge the battery.
  • EVs provide the comfortability of driving a bigger car due to the extra space at the back and front.
  • EVs are a hot trend right now, and with every passing year, EVs are becoming more and more affordable.

Conclusion

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more commonplace in the automotive industry. There are already quite a few electric vehicle options available on the market, and the number is growing every day. While electric cars are still not quite as popular as gas-powered vehicles, we think that it is likely that electric vehicles will become more popular in the coming years. They are a great alternative for consumers who want to reduce their carbon footprint!
