How does an electric powertrain work?

How does an electric powertrain work?

  1. The basic principle of an electric power train is quite similar to that of a conventional engine.

The main difference is that while the conventional engine burns a fuel such as gasoline or diesel to generate power, an electric powertrain uses an electric generator to produce electricity which is subsequently carried over to motors that drive the car.

  2. An electric powertrain is a vehicle design or system in which the primary source of propulsion is electric rather than using a combustion engine. And, in general, an electric powertrain is directly linked to the propulsion drivetrain without any mechanical discrete linkages. More specifically, the powertrain incorporates the motor-generator or inverter, along with the power inverter controller.

  3. An electric powertrain consists of four main parts. These are the motor, which is powered by a battery; the inverter, which allows for AC power to be changed into DC power for the battery; the battery itself; and the transmission, a series of gears and pulleys to which the motor is attached.

In a hybrid or purely electric vehicle, the motor powers the vehicle’s wheels. In a hybrid vehicle, the gas engine assists the motor while the gas engine is the primary source of power in a purely gas-powered vehicle. In a hybrid, the batteries are charged by the engine; in an electric vehicle, the batteries are charged by electricity transmitted through power lines.

  4. You got it completely wrong. Electric motors are not used for propulsion purposes. They are used to generate electricity that powers the car. Electric cars do not have an engine. Electric motors are much more efficient than internal combustion engines, but they are not as powerful and can’t be as small either. The powertrain comprises an electric motor, a transmission and a battery pack. The electric motor is driven by the battery pack and powers the vehicle. The transmission is like a gear box and is needed because electric motors work at one speed, unlike internal combustion engines that have numerous gears.
